The Technology Strategy Board

The Technology Strategy Board is an executive non-departmental public body, established by the Government in 2007 and sponsored by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

The Technology Strategy Board has a wide remit - to stimulate innovation in those areas which offer the greatest scope for boosting UK growth and productivity. It operates across Government and in partnership not only with business but with Government Departments, Regional Development Agencies, Devolved Administrations and Research Councils.

The Technology Strategy Board is focused on innovation driven by business needs.

The Technology Strategy Board aims to:

  • stimulate technology-enabled innovation in the areas which offer the greatest scope for boosting UK growth and productivity and to promote, support and invest in technology research, development and commercialisation;
  • invest in and manage a range of delivery mechanisms and programmes to drive technology-enabled innovation;
  • advise Government on how to remove barriers to innovation and accelerate the exploitation of new technologies;
  • develop an international strategy which will look at how to benchmark, collaborate and participate in innovation internationally;
  • spread knowledge, bringing people together to solve problems or make new advances.

The Technology Strategy Board advises Government on how to remove barriers to innovation and accelerate the exploitation of new technologies. They work in areas where there is a clear potential business benefit, helping today’s emerging technologies become the growth sectors of tomorrow.

By stimulating technological innovation across a wide range of business sectors, the Technology Strategy Board is well placed to make a real difference to the prosperity and influence of the UK in the medium term. It is in a position to become a thought leader in transforming innovation into market reality, and a key force in co-ordinating and expressing Government policy in this area.

The vision: "for the UK to be a global leader in innovation and a magnet for innovative businesses, who can apply technology rapidly, effectively and sustainably to create wealth and enhance quality of life."

To achieve this vision the Technology Strategy Board are developing a new strategy to accelerate the development and commercialisation of early stage, radical technologies.

To guide their work, the Technology Strategy Board has identified a number of key technology areas and key application areas where efforts are focused. These areas include nanotechnology, electronics, photonics and electrical systems, energy generation and supply, transport and high value services.
