Introduction

The Industrial Mathematics Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) is boosting dramatically the innovation performance of UK businesses through the wider use of mathematics.

Mathematical modelling, simulation and analysis are indispensable tools for accelerating business innovation. They bring fresh approaches to problems in design, product and service development, operations and strategy. Their power is enhanced by the unparalleled versatility of mathematical thinking. This allows us to address challenges across all business sectors and across all aspects of company activity.

The Industrial Mathematics KTN was launched in February 2006, with grant funding from the Department of Trade and Industry. It is managed by the Smith Institute for Industrial Mathematics and System Engineering, the UK's leading organisation operating at the interface between business and the mathematical science base. The network is a key element in the UK's cross-governmental Technology Programme, where it is leading the development of the associated Technology Strategy for Modelling and Simulation.

We had a very successful first year, during which we

  • allocated 11 CASE Awards to companies collaborating in the mathematical sciences;
  • coordinated another vibrant Study Group solving several industrial problems;
  • increased our team by 3 staff in response to the opportunities that we see emerging;
  • engaged an increasing number of companies across sectors and UK universities in our network.

In support of the wider Technology Strategy we plan to focus on particular areas during the next year where the Industrial Mathematics KTN will be particularly well placed to provide a forum for a coherent business voice to inform government of its technology needs and about issues. We are now targeting the financial services and retail sectors as priority areas.

We are looking forward to another year of major opportunities and successful outcomes.
