The Speaker

Alfio Quarteroni has been the Director of the Chair of Modeling and Scientific Computing at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) since 1998, and the Scientific Director of MOX, the Laboratory for Modeling and Scientific Computing at the Politecnico di Milano, since 2002. He is a member of the Italian Academy of Sciences and the Lombard Academy of Science, and holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Trieste.

Prof Quarteroni is the author of more than 200 papers in international scientific journals and conference proceedings, and also 18 books. He has been invited speaker at more than 200 international conferences and academic departments, including being a plenary lecturer at the 2006 International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid, and appointment to the Galileian Chair at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. He is a member of the editorial boards of 19 international journals and 3 book series.

The mathematical work of Prof Quarteroni and his group ranges from the simulations for performance optimisation of the Swiss yacht Alinghi, which has been the winner of the past two editions (2003 and 2007) of the America’s Cup, to the modelling and simulation of the cardiovascular system, which is the topic of an Advanced Grant recently awarded by the European Research Council.
