The 59th European Study Group with Industry was held at the University of Nottingham from 26th March to 30th March 2007, supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the KTN for Industrial Mathematics.

The Study Group followed the usual format of industrial problem presentations on the first day, followed by intensive work on the problems by participants during the next three days and presentations by the academics on the final day. A report on each problem is being prepared and they are available from this list. The Nottingham event handled six problems. This year we were pleased to offer a free problem slot to a small or medium sized company participating in the Study Group for the first time. The participating companies were BAE Systems, Norsk Hydro, Schlumberger, TMS Photometrics and Unilever (2 problems). The problem descriptions as presented to the Study Group are available here. |
There were 70 academic participants drawn from 12 universities in the UK and 8 overseas. John Billingham and their colleagues on the Local Organizing Committee, ensured that the event ran smoothly and did a fine job in creating a pleasant and productive environment for the participants.
In addition to the core activity of problem solving, participants could enjoy and make the most out of two plenary lectures on topics such as interfacial fluid flows (Burt Tilley) and shaking grains in fluids (Peter King). A stimulating after-dinner discussion on the future of Study Groups also took place on the Tuesday evening.
