A Knowledge Transfer Workshop on Industrial Inverse Problems was held on 17-18 March 2008 at the University of Leeds.

The purpose of the meeting was for industrialists and academics to identify inverse problems of common interest. Inverse Problems seek to identify causes from given effects and as such they are at the heart of many physical phenomena and their applications.

The Workshop followed the format of presentations from industry to introduce the problems on the first day, followed by intensive work on the problems by groups during the next day. The workshop was facilitated by the Industrial Mathematics Knowledge Transfer Network.

As an outcome of this activity it is planned that a rapport between academics and industrialists will be established and cemented through possible grant proposals for PhD Studentships / CASE Awards and Post-docs to be submitted to the EPSRC or to other foundations.

The workshop was supported by University of Leeds Knowledge Transfer grant.

The programme included the following talks:

  • Edward Bullard (Dexela Ltd.) - "Iterative methods for 3D reconstruction of digital breast tomosynthesis images"
  • Steven Stanley (Nexia Solutions) - "RadBall - a deployable radiation mapping device which can locate, quantify and characterise radiation hazards from a single position"
  • Brian Hoyle (University of Leeds) - "Combining tomographic sensing data with process process models"
  • Olivier Dubrule, Dan Kuznetsov and I. Escobar (Total E&P UK Ltd) - "Multidisciplinary inversion of Earth models of stochastic approaches"
