Study Groups

Introduction

Study Groups with Industry are an internationally recognized highlight of UK applied mathematics. They have been held annually in the UK for over 40 years, and provide a forum for industrialists to work alongside established academic mathematicians, postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students on problems of direct industrial importance. They have forged links that have led to many long-term collaborations.

The success of the Study Groups' unique format, using problems presented by industry as the basis for mathematical research, is shown by the extent to which it has been copied around the world. Study Groups are now also held annually in the USA, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, China and Australia. As Denmark and the Netherlands have embraced the Study Group format, the UK events have become the central component of a wider European series: for example the 2007 UK Study Group at the University of Nottingham was the 59th European Study Group with Industry (ESGI).

European collaboration is achieved by the overseas participation in the UK Study Groups, particularly of younger researchers. Many of the most committed UK participants are in demand as invited international experts at Study Group overseas.
