Flow of Melting Foam Layers

Applications are sought for this EPSRC Industrial CASE studentship at Southampton University offered in collaboration with Pilkington Group Limited. The project will form part of the research portfolio of the Knowledge Transfer Network for Industrial Mathematics.

The School of Mathematics has a studentship for research leading towards a PhD in applied mathematics with full support through an EPSRC CASE studentship. The project will be supervised by Prof Colin Please and Prof Alistair Fitt and will involve close collaboration with the project partner Pilkington Group Limited. The project is facilitated through the Knowledge Transfer Network for Industrial Mathematics.

The project concerns understanding the dynamic behaviour of silica and other constituent minerals as they melt to form a pool of molten glass. The project will involve mathematical modelling including fluid dynamics, heat transfer, asymptotic analysis and computational methods as well as close involvement with experimental work at Pilkington Technical Centre.

The studentship includes significant extra financial support above the basic studentship rates, and EPSRC eligibility rules apply.

Interested students may wish to contact Prof Colin Please for further details. Applications should be made either using the online form or by post. The starting date may be as late as Sept 2007 however, well qualified candidates will be considered for starting at any time before then.
