Study Group with Industry 2009: first study group to use social networks
The 68th European Study Group with Industry was held at the University of Southampton from 30th March to 3rd April 2009, supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the KTN for Industrial Mathematics. New to the Study Group this year was the use of social networks to support industrial mathematics. The ESGI68 social network was designed to allow contributions on each of the problems tackled in Southampton. The site contains problem descriptions, discussion areas and the presentations made on the final day of the Study Group.

Workshop summary: Inverse Problems 2009
A Knowledge Transfer Workshop on Industrial Inverse Problems was held on 23-24 March 2009 at the University of Leeds. The programme included talks on the following topics: How to calculate accurate concentration profiles in two-phase flows using electrical capacitance tomography (ECT); Landmine detection using ultra wideband (UWB) radar - signal recovery in a lossy, inhomogeneous and high clutter environment; and Inverse problems in industry: Stochastical and analytical correlation between consumer and production.

Workshop summary: Data assimilation for industrial inverse problems
A science and technology workshop on data assimilation for industrial inverse problems was held in January 2009. The aim of the workshop was to explore the potential for wider and improved use of data assimilation in industrial applications. Data assimilation is well developed in some applications, notably tracking, weather prediction and oil reservoir simulation history matching. This workshop presented the state of the art in data assimilation and identified further opportunities for its application to the solution of industrial inverse problems.
