Internships Expressions of Interest: seeking PhD students for Industrial Mathematics Internships
Internship projects currently seeking PhD students are in the areas of:
- Estimation of droplet/particle collision rates and agglomeration in spray drying towers - from Procter and Gamble
- Portfolio placement strategy optimisation - from Willis
- Parallel computation of catastrophe modelling events - from Willis
- Humid Air Condensation and Water Run-off to Sump in Fuel Tank - from Airbus UK
- Statistical data project - wattson and holmes, sniffing out the good stuff - from DIY Kyoto
- Development of pattern recognition algorithms for noisy electricity use data - from Moixa Energy
- Using a Graphical Processing Unit in oilfield reservoir simulation - from Roxar Ltd
- Advanced algorithms for scientific computing - from NAG Ltd

Study Group with Industry 2009: Final reports available online
The 68th European Study Group with Industry was held at Southampton University from 30 March to 3 April 2008, supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the KTN for Industrial Mathematics. There were five industrial problems handled at the Southampton event and the participating companies were DSTL, EPRasheed, Jaguar, SmartReamer and VR Technology. The final reports for all presented industrial problems and a report on the Credit Crunch discussion that took place during the event are now available.

Four new Industrial Case Awards allocated
The Industrial Mathematics KTN has allocated the following four new Industrial CASE Awards covering a range of technical themes:
- Airbus & Bristol University: Dynamics of aircraft main landing gears;
- NATS & Nottingham University: Hybridising exact and heuristic search methods for landing operations at London Heathrow;
- Oasys Ltd (Arup) & Strathclyde University: Fast iterative solvers in Geomechanics;
- Trend Micro Ltd & Bristol University: Cloud computing and secure databases.
The KTN expects to begin processing applications for the 2010 awards in early 2010, although applications before then are welcome.

July SBRI competitions: Prosthetics, Automatic Imagery Extraction and Managing Motorways
The MoD has announced two new SBRI competitions that are now open. Also open now is a new competition from the DfT and the Highways Agency on using synthetic environments in transport.

The 8th Mathematics of Networks meeting will take place on the 18 September 2009 in the William Gates Building, Cambridge. This series of free, interdisciplinary meetings allow researchers from different fields to come together and exchange ideas in an informal atmosphere.

Study Group Dates 2009-2010
Study Groups with Industry are an internationally recognized highlight of UK applied mathematics. They have been held annually in the UK for over 40 years, and provide a forum for industrialists to work alongside established academic mathematicians, postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students on problems of direct industrial importance. The schedule of future UK and international Study Groups out to 2010 is provided.
