Internships Expressions of Interest: seeking a partner for an Industrial Mathematics Internship
Internship projects currently seeking a partner are in the areas of:
- Landing gear steering system - from Airbus
- Review of Great Britain electricity transmission security standards - from National Grid
- Modelling of pneumatic tyre characteristics including pressure, weight and alignment - from WheelRight
- Non-invasive glucose measurement – development of a correlation model between the eye and blood - from Lein Applied Diagnostics
- Quality assessment for automatically created documents - from Hewlett-Packard Laboratories
- Influence of surface diffusion on fracture phenomena at bi-material interfaces - from Pilkington Group
- Discrete optimisation - from University of Birmingham

Workshop: Statistical Modelling of Weather Risks for Insurance, London, 16 February 2009
The Industrial Mathematics KTN and the Natural Environment Research Council are holding a workshop on the topic of Statistical Modelling of Weather Risks for Insurance. The workshop is aimed at experts from industry, academia and the weather services, who are using statistical methods to work with weather data. The event will take place at Lloyd’s of London on 16th February 2009. Attendance is by invitation. If you are interested in attending please contact Dr Vera Hazelwood.

Study Group 2009 now open for problems
The 2009 Study Group, to be held at University of Southampton on 30 March to 3 April, is now open for problems. Companies wishing to present a problem to ESGI 2009 should contact Dr David Allwright to reserve a problem slot.

Three Industrial CASE Awards now recruiting
Three Industrial CASE Award projects are now looking for talented students. The first project "Thermal effects in dynamic wetting and related capillary flows" is based at the University of Birmingham in conjunction with Kodak. The second project "Investigation of transition effects in an adaptively refined ALE method" is based at the University of Reading in conjunction with AWE. The third project "Network analysis of foreign exchange markets" is based at the University of Oxford in conjunction with HSBC. The webpage advertising vacancies in the area of industrial mathematics is available from the homepage of the Industrial Mathematics KTN website. We are now inviting suggestions for other projects to commence between April 2009 and October 2010.

Newton Institute Call for Proposals
The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences is a national research institute in Cambridge. It aims to bring together mathematical scientists from UK universities and leading experts from overseas for concentrated research on specialised topics in all branches of the mathematical sciences, from pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics, to theoretical aspects of any discipline. The Institute invites proposals for research programmes in any branch of mathematics or the mathematical sciences. Proposals to be considered should be submitted by 31st January or 31st July respectively.

Mathematics in the Plant Sciences Study Group, Nottingham, 5-8 January 2009
The Second Mathematics in the Plant Sciences Study Group (MPSSG), hosted by GARNet and the Centre for Plant Integrative Biology, will take place at the University of Nottingham from 5th-8th January 2009. Both companies and academics are welcome to register.
