Launch of the LANCS Initiative in operational research
The LANCS Initiative is a collaboration between four of the UK’s leading universities in Operational Research (OR) – Lancaster, Nottingham, Cardiff and Southampton. The consortium brings together the complementary perspectives of mathematics, computer science and management science. The formal launch of the LANCS Initiative was held at The Institution of Engineering and Technology in London on Wednesday 20 May and was attended by representatives from the aerospace and defence, banking, transport and public sectors.

Insurance industry priorities in environmental risk management
NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) is supporting the development of a Special Interest Group (SIG) in Environmental Risk Management. A social network has been set up to provide a forum for the discussion of strategic alignment within the SIG activities between NERC priorities and the insurance industry. Contributions to a discussion of the industry priorities for the SIG are welcome.

EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowships Call 2009
EPSRC is offering Postdoctoral Fellowships in theoretical physics, theoretical computer sciences, mathematical sciences and cross-disciplinary interfaces to enable the most talented new researchers to establish an independent research career, shortly or immediately after completing a PhD.

SBRI competition - Mobile phone security challenge
The Technology Strategy Board has an SBRI competition, which opened 20 April 2009. It is being run by the Design Council on behalf of the Home Office and is looking at how technology can be applied to the area of mobile phone security.

Three new SBRI competitions
There are three new SBRI competitions that have just been added to the Technology Strategy Board website, being run by the Centre of Defence Enterprise. Two of these are being run for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the other is part of the INSTINCT programme of the Home Office.
