Internships Expressions of Interest: seeking PhD students for Industrial Mathematics Internships
Internship projects currently seeking PhD students are in the areas of:
  • Humid Air Condensation and Water Run-off to Sump in Fuel Tank - from Airbus UK
  • Statistical data project - wattson and holmes, sniffing out the good stuff - from DIY Kyoto
  • Complexity analysis of scheduling algorithms for parallel computing - from ARM Ltd
  • Improved diving decompression model - the Unified or Complete decompression model for divers - from VR Technology Ltd
  • Development of pattern recognition algorithms for noisy electricity use data - from Moixa Energy
  • Using a Graphical Processing Unit in oilfield reservoir simulation - from Roxar Ltd
  • Advanced algorithms for scientific computing - from NAG Ltd
  • Biometric data fusion strategies - from HOSDB
  • Simulation techniques for through-life modelling and analysis - from AgustaWestland

Launch of the LANCS Initiative in operational research
The LANCS Initiative is a collaboration between four of the UK’s leading universities in Operational Research (OR) – Lancaster, Nottingham, Cardiff and Southampton. The consortium brings together the complementary perspectives of mathematics, computer science and management science. The formal launch of the LANCS Initiative was held at The Institution of Engineering and Technology in London on Wednesday 20 May and was attended by representatives from the aerospace and defence, banking, transport and public sectors.

Insurance industry priorities in environmental risk management
NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) is supporting the development of a Special Interest Group (SIG) in Environmental Risk Management. A social network has been set up to provide a forum for the discussion of strategic alignment within the SIG activities between NERC priorities and the insurance industry. Contributions to a discussion of the industry priorities for the SIG are welcome.

EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowships Call 2009
EPSRC is offering Postdoctoral Fellowships in theoretical physics, theoretical computer sciences, mathematical sciences and cross-disciplinary interfaces to enable the most talented new researchers to establish an independent research career, shortly or immediately after completing a PhD.

SBRI competition - Mobile phone security challenge
The Technology Strategy Board has an SBRI competition, which opened 20 April 2009. It is being run by the Design Council on behalf of the Home Office and is looking at how technology can be applied to the area of mobile phone security.

Three new SBRI competitions
There are three new SBRI competitions that have just been added to the Technology Strategy Board website, being run by the Centre of Defence Enterprise. Two of these are being run for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the other is part of the INSTINCT programme of the Home Office.

The 8th Mathematics of Networks meeting will take place on the 18 September 2009 in the William Gates Building, Cambridge. This series of free, interdisciplinary meetings allow researchers from different fields to come together and exchange ideas in an informal atmosphere.
