New web platform for social networking
Increasingly social media is being used by the KTN to augment existing activities. Notably social media has enabled wider participation in the UK Study Group since April 2009. The Technology Strategy Board have recently developed a new web platform (_connect) with the aim of bringing social networking to a broader range of KTN activities. From March 2010 the KTN has a new online presence on _connect. Please take a look, register and get involved. Please provide any feedback on how you would like to see the new platform develop to enquires@industrialmaths.net.

Study Group with Industry 2010: Last call for problems
The 2010 Study Group is to be held at the University of Warwick on 12-16 April 2010. This is the last call for problems, we have two slots available so companies wishing to present a problem to ESGI 2010 should contact Dr David Allwright as soon as possible to reserve a problem slot. There are four problems confirmed so far for the Warwick event and the participating companies are Selex Galileo (emitter-platform association), Teknova (structural models for wind turbines), Lloyd's of London (modelling hurricane track memory) and AIR Worldwide (earthquake risk: including uncertainties in the ground motion calculation). We encourage academics to register.

Internships Expressions of Interest: seeking a partner for an Industrial Mathematics Internship
Internship projects currently seeking PhD students are in the areas of:
- Selex Galileo (Edinburgh): To undertake a fundamental mathematical study examining the topology of antenna radiation patterns with the objective of finding analytical low sidelobe distributions with given aperture geometry and dynamic range constraints.
- Thales (Crawley): To extend the foundations for the information-theoretic based analysis of the performance limits of radar systems to allow the same rigour to be applied to a wider range of practical radar problems.
- MBDA and Cambridge Correlators (Pontefract, West Yorkshire): To explore the possibilities of compact optical computers based on Fourier Power spectra correlation in unconventional fields of Computational Imaging, where the processing can compensate for the use of simple or sparse sensing to recover imagery at a quality, which would normally employ high resolution and high bandwidth imaging optics and detectors.
- Engineering modelling and simulation company (Coventry): Research suitable techniques and existing technologies which reduce the size of these systems of simultaneous equations to significantly improve the efficiency of the simulation. Such techniques include polynomial-based techniques such as Triangular Sets, Groebner bases, graph-theory-based techniques such as Tearing and Relaxing (symbolic Gaussian Elimination).
- Thales (Crawley): A rigorous analysis of clutter mapping of radar trackers, and for each potential solution, to consider efficient strategies for computation on real systems. Scientific computing is also required.
- Arm (Cambridge): Analysis of errors in next generation digital circuits including assisting to build suitable statistical error occurrence models, to develop a methodology for applying these models and to understand how those errors will be observed in the data set.
- 5one (London): The prediction of the movement and substitution of sales from product to product when changes in assortment are made to a category within a grocery retailer using Bayesian probability.

Energy Systems Week, Cambridge, 24-27 May 2010
The Isaac Newton Institute is hosting an Energy Systems Week, 24-27 May 2010. The event is organised in association with the Newton Institute programme "Stochastic Processes in Communication Systems", the Knowledge Transfer Network for Industrial Mathematics, and the Council for the Mathematical Sciences. This workshop will provide an introduction to current modelling challenges in power systems for the benefit of systems mathematicians. The week will begin with two days of technical tutorial talks from modelling experts already working in the field, followed by industrial problem-scoping and networking sessions.

Underpinning Defence Mathematics Programme: Latest news
Academic partners are being sought for UDM Internship projects. The details of five specific project opportunities are being prepared in collaboration with the host companies (Thales, Selex and MBDA). See the list of current expressions of interest for Industrial Mathematics Internships for more details as they become available. Proposals submitted in response to an invitation to tender for MoD research contracts are currently being assessed. It is anticipated that MoD will fund up to 3 of the proposed projects at an approximate cost of £50k each.

How Arctic sea ice melts, Lighthill Institute, 24 March 2010
The Lighthill Institute of Mathematical Sciences is hosting an evening of lectures on "Applications to climate policy - how Arctic sea ice melts: some new thoughts and their implications for climate prediction" on 24 March 2010 from 17:30-20:00. In this lecture, the reductionist, statistical and combined approaches to modelling climate on a global and regional scale will be outlined and compared. Lord Professor Hunt will also explore how to use data on all scales to compare predictions and draw conclusions about global warming. Dr Feltham will be speaking about the physics of sea ice melting and how this new physics changes if at all the predictions of Arctic sea ice extent.
