Internships Expressions of Interest: seeking a partner for an Industrial Mathematics Internship
Internship projects currently seeking PhD students are in the areas of:
  • Selex Galileo (Edinburgh): To develop an image recovery algorithm using sparse data sets derived from 2D (passive) and 3D (active) single pixel cameras (SPC) or single point scanning systems.
  • Liberty Syndicates (London): To help implement Solvency II Internal Model Standards to meet the Lloyd’s (Regulator) Dry Run deadlines for 2010. Solvency II is a risk based framework for all insurers based in the EU which will harmonise standards across the EU. Firms will develop a Calculation Kernel (stochastic model / DFA) within an Internal Model structure.
  • Selex Galileo (Edinburgh): To undertake a fundamental mathematical study examining the topology of antenna radiation patterns with the objective of finding analytical low sidelobe distributions with given aperture geometry and dynamic range constraints.
  • Thales (Crawley): To extend the foundations for the information-theoretic based analysis of the performance limits of radar systems to allow the same rigour to be applied to a wider range of practical radar problems.
  • MBDA and Cambridge Correlators (Pontefract, West Yorkshire): To explore the possibilities of compact optical computers based on Fourier Power spectra correlation in unconventional fields of Computational Imaging, where the processing can compensate for the use of simple or sparse sensing to recover imagery at a quality, which would normally employ high resolution and high bandwidth imaging optics and detectors.
  • Thales (Crawley): A rigorous analysis of clutter mapping of radar trackers, and for each potential solution, to consider efficient strategies for computation on real systems. Scientific computing is also required.
  • Arm (Cambridge): Analysis of errors in next generation digital circuits including assisting to build suitable statistical error occurrence models, to develop a methodology for applying these models and to understand how those errors will be observed in the data set.
  • 5one (London): The prediction of the movement and substitution of sales from product to product when changes in assortment are made to a category within a grocery retailer using Bayesian probability.
If you are interested in partnering one of these projects, or have a suggestion for a new project, please contact Dr Vera Hazelwood. A number of Internships are well underway with case studies now available.
