Internships Expressions of Interest: seeking a partner for an Industrial Mathematics Internship
The Industrial Mathematics KTN provides assistance to industrialists and academics in finding a suitable partner for an Internship. The topics of the Expressions of Interest received to date include "influence of surface diffusion on fracture phenomena at bi-material interfaces" and "discrete optimisation". The complete list of current Expressions of Interest received from companies and universities is updated as forms are received. For further details on the expanded Internships programme please email Dr Vera Hazelwood, or visit www.ktn-internships.net. We are now inviting suggestions for other projects to commence from now until June 2009.

Alan Tayler Lecture, St Cross Building, Oxford, 24 November
The 2008 Alan Tayler Lecture will be delivered by Prof Alfio Quarteroni of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology on 24 November 2008. The lecture entitled "Mathematical Modeling in Medicine, Sports and Technology" will be held on 24th November 2008 at 5pm in the Gulbenkian Lecture Theatre which is situated in the St Cross Building on Manor Road, Oxford.

Workshop: Mathematics in Defence, Harwell, 11 November 2008
To help you understand how mathematics plays a fundamental role in solving some of the complex requirements of the UK’s Armed Forces, the Centre for Defence is jointly hosting a half day workshop with the Industrial Mathematics KTN in its offices on the Harwell Science & Innovation Campus on Tuesday 11th November 2008, 12:30 – 16:00. This workshop will be an opportunity for you to meet key MOD scientists and decision makers. It will be an opportunity for you to understand the specific challenges and issues faced by our Armed Forces today, tomorrow and in the future. Industrial CASE Award now recruiting
Talented students are invited to apply for a CASE Award based at the University of Birmingham. The project "Thermal effects in dynamic wetting and related capillary flows" is in conjunction with Kodak. The webpage advertising vacancies in the area of industrial mathematics is available from the homepage of the Industrial Mathematics KTN website. We are now inviting suggestions for other projects to commence between April 2009 and October 2010.

Workshop on the Theory of Magnetic Confinement for Fusion
A workshop on Theory of Magnetic Confinement for Fusion was held on 22 September 2008 at Balliol College, Oxford. The workshop was held in commemoration of Professor L.C. Woods, with the aim of stimulating new ideas and independent thought on the topic of magnetic confinement of plasmas for fusion. The full report for the workshop will be available soon.
