Industrial CASE Awards allocation update
The Industrial Mathematics KTN has allocated all 4 of its CASE awards from EPSRC. The first project "Network analysis of foreign exchange markets" is based at Oxford University in collaboration with HSBC Bank; the second project "Investigation of transition effects in an adaptively refined ALE method" is based at Reading University in collaboration with AWE; the third project "Thermal effects in dynamic wetting and related capillary flows" is based at the University of Birmingham in collaboration with Kodak European Research; the final project "Analysis of large-scale atmospheric flows" is based at Reading University in collaboration with MET Office. We have also secured funding for a fifth project "Special fluid dynamical effects in Sport" which is based at University College London in collaboration with TotalSim. We are now inviting suggestions for projects to commence between April 2009 and October 2010.

Workshop: Mathematics in Defence
Expressions of Interest are sought from academics wishing to participate in a workshop jointly organised by the Industrial Mathematics KTN and the Ministry of Defence on 11th November 2008. The aim of the workshop will be to enable MoD to make better use of mathematical know-how in its technology programmes. A limited number of places are available. MoD and the Technology Strategy Board announce reformed SBRI programme
The Technology Strategy Board is pleased to announce that the first of the pilot competitions for the reformed SBRI programme is now open, with the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The assessment date for these competitions is 30th September 2008.

Study Group 2008: final report now available online
The 64th European Study Group with Industry was held at Heriot-Watt University from 7th to 11th April 2008, supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the KTN for Industrial Mathematics. There were six problems handled at the Edinburgh event and the participating companies were The Actuarial Profession, E.ON, Motorola, National Grid, Reliable Data Systems and Unilever. The final report for Reliable Data Systems is now on the website.

Workshop: Mathematical Modelling of Heterogeneous Ignition, Combustion and Explosion
A KTN Science & Technology workshop on Mathematical Modelling of Heterogeneous Ignition, Combustion and Explosion is to be held at Imperial College, in London. The date of this event has recently been changed to 22-23 April 2009.

EPSRC-DSTL Call in Signal Processing: 30 technical challenges
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) have formed a strategic partnership to fund novel research in signal processing, and are launching a call for outline proposals to address research challenges in the area of signal processing.
