Dr John Ockendon, the 2006 Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) Gold Medal winner, will give this year's IMA summer lecture at 5.30pm on 27 June 2007 at the Royal Society in London.
John is the Research Director of the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the KTN for Industrial Mathematics.
John's talk "Stimulating Mathematics in Industry" will focus on the impetus that industrially-driven problems can give to mathematics and the benefits that industrial researchers can acquire from the ideas that emerge. Also the different interpretations of "industrial mathematics" around the world will be reviewed, thereby highlighting the key ingredients that need to be in place for this rich interface to be exploited to the best possible mutual benefit. Mention will also be made of the dangers that confront researchers working in this highly interdisciplinary activity.
The audience will include Institute members and invited guests from goverment, industry, education and kindred professional and learned associations.
The Address will follow the Institute's AGM. Entrance to the Lecture is free of charge but a ticket is required. Orders for tickets should be sent to Mrs Lynn Webster.
