OECD meeting on industrial mathematics
The Industrial Mathematics KTN recently represented the UK at the Global Science Forum - Maths in Industry workshop in Heidelberg organised by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). 18 other countries were also represented, and examples of national best practice in the transfer of mathematical know-how between academia and industry were shared.
The UK model of the KTN and Technology Translators was well received by the participating countries. Other examples of note were:
- Canadian Internships scheme
- Study Groups with Industry (now active in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Portugal, the USA and other countries)
- Modelling weeks for students
- Transfer of scientists between industry and academia (e.g. Royal Society Industrial Fellowships)
The output of the workshop will be an OECD report identifying good practice in knowledge transfer for industrial mathematics across the participating countries. The report will be available in late 2007.
