A recent EPSRC review of the UK Study Groups between 2002 and 2004 has highlighted the benefits of this mechanism in terms of research quality, impact, communication and cost effectiveness.

EPSRC's final assessment of the Study Groups between 2002 and 2004 inclusive awarded top marks in every category. Research quality, research planning and practice and potential scientific impact all achieved the highest rating of "internationally leading", while output of research staff, communication of research, potential benefits to society, cost effectiveness and overall assessment were each rated "outstanding".
