Nan Gall is developing a densitometer for application down oil wells, based on an off-the-shelf transducer. The transducer is not specifically designed for such harsh environments and hence there are important issues such as the device's best mode of operation and the effects of the necessary pressure-rated housings. Particular questions considered by the Study Group were how to ensure that the results are independent of viscosity, and how the device responds to an inhomogeneous fluid.
