This Internship project was carried out at Dstl, in conjunction with the Cambridge University. It is part of the KTN's Industrial Mathematics Internships Programme and funded by EPSRC. Start date: July 2009; duration: 6 months.

Project description

The Internship involved the modelling of an advection-reaction-diffusion process, specifically the diffusion of a contaminating solvent out of a drop of polymer solution and into a surrounding layer of decontaminant. Effects under consideration included the effects of the polymer within the drop on the decontamination process, and the effects of advection in the decontaminant layer. The approach taken to solve the problem was a combination of numerical techniques, underpinned by theoretical development.
