ECMI2006 Round Table Meeting
ECMI2006 Conference, Madrid, 11 July 2006.
The NETIAM project has used mathematics as a tool to integrate the approaches of science from many disciplines. It also started the Unleashing Mathematics initiative (see link under related resources below) to increase awareness and the use of mathematics in industry, commerce, government and in society generally.
During the ECMI 2006 Conference at Madrid in July 2006, a round table session was held on "Trans-European Collaboration on Mathematics-in-Industry in the 21st Century". Some 50 participants sought to consider the best ways of coordinating interdisciplinary mathematics in Europe and to identify elements of an Action Plan for Mathematics in Industry and Society to begin in 2007.
The session comprised presentations followed by open discussions:
Dr Hilary Ockendon, Oxford: Introduction, setting and aims
Dr Melvin Brown, Smith Institute: Interdisciplinary coordination: NETIAM and MOCASIN
Prof Mario Primicerio, Firenze: New areas: Mathematical modelling of criminality in the urban environment
Prof Bob Mattheij, Eindhoven: Maths with industry - MACSInet & MAGICAL
Dr Ian Perry, European Commission: Maths in FP7 and the European Research Council
Dr John Ockendon, Oxford: European Study Groups and the intercontinental dimension
