Project summary: Radio spectrum management
The radio spectrum is used for TV and radio broadcasts, mobile radio and telecommunications ranging from courier companies to emergency services. It is an enormously valuable resource, contributing more than £24 billion to the UK economy each year.
Researchers in the Faraday Partnership for Industrial Mathematics are demonstrating how mathematical techniques can help spectrum users squeeze more capacity from the limited frequencies available to them. The research is also showing how maths can throw light on the possible consequences of ‘spectrum trading’, which is currently being introduced in the UK. The key challenges are to exploit fully the potential for spectrum re-use and to build hybrid models that include the associated engineering issues alongside the economic interaction between regulator, operators and consumers.
