The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is supporting a Programme of Underpinning Defence Mathematics (UDM) through the Industrial Mathematics Knowledge Transfer Network. In the current phase of the UDM Programme, the KTN is working with the Electro Magnetic Remote Sensing Defence Technology Centre (EMRS DTC) to identify priority areas. The Programme may be expanded in future to support a wider range of defence technology areas.

The main objectives of the current phase of the UDM Programme are:

  • engagement of underpinning mathematical capability new to the EMRS DTC;
  • identification of the best mathematical ideas and solutions through an open competition;
  • creation of new collaborations for knowledge transfer through Internships;
  • review and dissemination of completed projects.

The current phase of the UDM Programme will establish 2 or 3 short research contracts (around £50k each) and up to 5 six-month Internships, on projects aligned with EMRS DTC priorities. Successful applicants, Internship partners, and representatives of the key stakeholders will participate in a Programme Review Seminar to disseminate the results of the Programme, and review its implementation.
