The call for proposals closed on 31 January 2010. Submitted proposals are currently being assessed. Research is required to develop ways to define and measure the amount of information in data or image streams that is relevant to deciding on a particular issue, eg detecting, counting and classifying targets. Whether proposing new research or knowledge transfer, successful applicants will be expected to show how the research that they undertake will be developing or applying underpinning mathematics of relevance to one or more of the following example military objectives in electromagnetic remote sensing:

  • efficient pre-processing – to avoid unnecessary processing of data or images;
  • compressive sensing – to decide if there are sparser ways to gather data and image streams that still contain the information needed;
  • compression that preserves information content – to reduce bandwidth of comms;
  • data and image fusion – to combine multiple sources to increase the information content in data or image streams.

The total budget available is £150k and it is anticipated that this will be used to fund up to 3 research contracts at an approximate cost of £50k each. The closing date for applications was midnight on 31 January 2010. Proposals were particularly encouraged from researchers not already working with defence experts in EMRS.

Successful applicants will be awarded MoD research contracts. A contract template (fully funded 705) is available to download. Annex A of the contract template lists the DEFCONs that shall apply to the contract. A full list of DEFCONs are available here.
